This series was inspired by a succession of walks that I took in and around local areas of ‘natural beauty’. During my walks, I started making pinhole photographs of the landscape around me. The resulting images were soft, abstract and ethereal. They create a general sense of a place while giving away no specific details.
After creating these representations of the ‘natural world’, I then set about defacing them. I damaged and disfigured my photographs by treating them as rubbish. The results do not make for comfortable viewing. Not just because of aesthetics but also, as a function of their uncertain/transitional status. Are these images photographs or are they rubbish?
Ultimately, this series reflects my own feelings about how the ‘natural environment’ is being treated.
